Triangle Research Partners Publishes New Report, Improving the Bull City: What Matters to Durhams Young Professionals

Research Triangle Park, North Carolina – November 16, 2009

Research Triangle Park, North Carolina November 16, 2009. Triangle Research Partners, LLC published today a new report, Improving the Bull City: What Matters to Durhams Young Professionals.  The report, an analysis of a recent survey the firm conducted, asked Durhams young professionals (ages 20-40) key questions about concerns in their neighborhoods, in the city, what elected officials should address, and what questions they had for city council.  They were also asked about their political activity and engagement.

The purpose of this report is to share with Durhams decision-makers and leaders what civic issues are not only important to young professionals, but what they wish to see addressed as a way to improve the city for all, said Nathaniel H. Goetz, president and CEO. It is hoped that this information will be considered alongside what other groups are engaged in, thereby strengthening the understanding of what Durhams priorities are and addressing those priorities collectively.

The survey collected responses from 61 young professionals residing in 40 neighborhoods across the city. Some of the surveys key findings include:

"The top three city concerns young professionals identified were economic opportunity (job opportunities, smart growth, and sustainability), crime and safety (drugs, gangs, and improved prevention programs), and public schools (improvement, competitiveness, and disparities)."

"The top three issues young professionals would like the Durham City Council to address are crime and safety (gangs, broken window behavior, drugs, and neighborhood safety), growth and sustainability (affordability, desire to benefit all citizens, responsible growth, gentrification, and investment in infrastructure), and public school improvement (disparities between schools, increase charter school options, and increase community involvement)."

Young professionals play a very active role in civic engagement in Durham, said Goetz. As they work to establish their careers, they are also beginning to take their place amongst Durhams leadership, influencing the direction that our city will take.

Triangle Research Partners' Analysis Will Help United Way of Acadiana to Increase Community Awareness of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)

Research Triangle Park, North Carolina – October 6, 2008

Triangle Research Partners today completed an analysis of Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) filing trends for four Louisiana Parishes: Acadia, Lafayette, St. Martin, and Vermilion.

The goal of the analysis, conducted for the United Way of Acadiana in Lafayette, Louisiana, is to raise awareness of EITC and its impact on the community.  With two recent hurricanes and uncertain economic conditions impacting both Louisiana and the rest of the nation, increasing awareness of the ETIC as a form of relief, especially amongst low-income families, is of increasing importance.

“This project allows us to see these trends for the very first time, confirms important information about our community, and crystallizes the solution,”

said Sarah Berthelot, chief of philanthropy at United Way of Acadiana.

“We will use this information to pursue grants, build partnerships, and talk to our donors about EITC and its importance as a community strategy.”

One of the more revealing findings the analysis showed was that out of the four Parishes studied, Lafayette, with the largest, most urban population of just over 203,000, had the lowest percent of EITC filers at 23.5%, while St. Martin, with a much smaller, rural population of 48,583 had the highest percent of EITC filers at 33.5%. This suggests that awareness efforts might be increased in Lafayette and best practices to do so could come from other Parishes, such as St. Martin.

“We hope that other communities will follow United Way of Acadiana’s example of using trend data about EITC to help raise awareness amongst their populations,”

said Triangle Research Partners president & CEO Nathaniel H. Goetz.

“Many who could benefit are still not taking advantage of this simply because they do not know it is available to them.”

Triangle Research Partners Completes Community – Level Analysis of Disabled Population in Durham, North Carolina

Research Triangle Park, North Carolina – October 1, 2008

Triangle Research Partners today completed a community-level analysis of the disabled population residing in Durham, North Carolina for the Durham County JobLink Career Center.  The analysis, conducted at the zip code level, identified key demographics of Durham’s disabled population, including the employment status of adults.

"The primary goal was to identify the majority of disabled citizens by community so that outreach efforts could be maximized through strategic planning for Durham County,"

said Tanya Spaulding-Hill, JobLink manager at the City of Durham Office of Economic and Workforce Development.

In particular, the analysis found that out of the eight residential zip codes in Durham, the two most in need of attention are 27701 and 27704.

Zip code 27701 ranks first in percent of population over the age of 5 with a disability (25.8%) and fifth in percent of employed disabled adults ages 21-64 (only 51.5% are employed); and zip code 27704 ranks second in percent of population over the age of 5 with a disability (23.7%) and fourth in percent of employed disabled adults ages 21-64 (only 54.8% are employed).

"This is the type of project that fits squarely within our mission to help organizations learn more about their community and then actively engage in helping to improve it,"

said Nathaniel H. Goetz, president & CEO.

"Durham County JobLink Career Center’s public commitment is very impressive and we feel quite fortunate to having been able to assist them."
